July: Local Events

WELCOME to our monthly rundown of some of the coolest events happening in NYC! Each month we will trawl the interwebs, to bring you some of the more unique and New Yorky goings-on about town. Here are our top picks for July:

Sights:

If you like kites and kayaks then this fest is for you! Seriously though, Socrates Sculpture Park is lovely and this Saturday, July 9th, 11am-3pm you (and probably a whole lotta chiddlers) can design and fly your own kites, whilst hundreds of kayakers participating in this year's Manhattan Kayak Circumnavigation will go gliding by. There will be workshops throughout the day given by artists from Socrates and The Noguchi Museum, which you should give yourself some extra time to check out.

Sounds:

Lincoln Center Out of Doors is always one of my favorite music series every year and this year is no exception. This season there's such gems as Patti Smith, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Lucinda Williams and Thao & the Get Down Stay Down with tons of great classical, roots and international music to chose from in between. It's such a wonderful venue! I have simply never seen a bad show there.

Learn:

It's outdoor movie time and there seem to be more to chose from than ever this year! My top pick has to be the nineties classic Basquiat, playing at Hudson, Pier 1 on July 13th. This is such an excellent biography of the amazing artist Jean-Michel Basquiat who battled with mental health and addiction issues throughout his all too brief life. If you want to learn about his life, The Factory (amazing cameo of Andy Warhol by David Bowie) and NYC's art movements in the late 70s and early 80s, this movie is not to be missed. Also, close second for obvious reasons is Purple Rain on Thu, July 21st, but I would get there hella early as this is sure to be packed.

Explore:

On July 16th, 10am-4pm the Waterfront Alliance's annual City of Water Day will be taking place all over the city and New Jersey. There will be free boat tours on all kinds of vessels, from tall ships to tugboats; free rowing, kayaking, paddle-boarding, and even a cardboard Kayak Race. The main location is Governor's Island, but check the website for an event near you.

It's Summertime! Get outside!
