deVivre takes your summer weekend on a much needed breezy adventure
If you're anything like us you've been doing your best to make the most of the incredible summer weather we've been having so far. From rooftops to backyard gardens, from going all out and catching a riverside concert to staying in and savoring a cool glass of Sancerre on the stoop, getting outside is the best way to hit your NYC summer groove. Keeping cool in the neighborhood is always a great idea, but don't forget that NYC is secretly home to some of the best beaches, boardwalks, and boat rides on the East Coast. If you want to throw your summer plans a curve ball, hop a ferry and head to the shore (or for you non-beach bums who prefer an actual curve ball, check out our stadium picks).
While the A train is definitely still the best way to get to Harlem, it's no longer our favorite way to head out to the Rockaways.Newly expanded NYC Ferry service leaves from Wall Street and hits the big briny for a gorgeous ride through New York Harbor, landing you smack dab in the middle of the Rockaway peninsula. A quick (free) shuttle ride and you're at Riis Park, one of the most pristine stretches of sand in the city. When it's time to step out of the sun, pop into the Jacob Riis Bazaar. With events happening daily (that's right—daily!), all New Yorkers are sure to find something to tickle their fancy there. Haven't heard of it? Created by the same guys that launched the BK Night Bazaar in Williamsburg/Greenpoint a few years back, the Riis Bazaar brings together amazing music, adorable pop-up shops, some of the tastiest underground food vendors east of Smorgasburg. Grab a paleta (fresh fruit ices similar to a popsicle) at La New Yorkina, get your very own beach chair and umbrella (reserved especially for you, deVivre style), and, after the sun goes down, relax with a cool 1875 Pale Ale from Rockaway Brewing Co. and sway your hips to The Rockaway's own Lorena Leigh strumming her ukelele around the campfire.
Want us to snag you ferry tickets, rent you a surfboard, or have a beach chair waiting for you? Get in touch. Like Joey Ramone says, "It's not hard, not far to reach, We can hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach".
We have a few deVivre birthdays to celebrate this month and we're doing it in true deVivre style: at Coney Island, of course. From the iconic Wonder Wheel (which offers one of our favorite far-off vistas of starry Manhattan) to the classic old-school boardwalk, we're taking a cool evening walk down memory lane. On the agenda: grabbing a frank at the revival shop of the world's first hot dog, Feltman's (only after having taken a ride on the classic Cyclone - duh! we learned our lesson as kids), taking a quick dive in the ocean and a couple of selfies, sipping on a malt milkshake from Tom's while playing a few games of Whac-a-Mole and Ring Toss, and of course ending the day watching the fireworks from the Coney Island Brewery. Jealous? We've got the perfect birthday plans for all you Cancers and Leos, just get in touch and we'll take you there.
What are you doing this weekend? Whatever you've got planned, stay cool and have fun.
